“On Lap 45, if you had told me we’d win this race, I’d have told you were lying,” Hornaday said. “We brought the truck back to where we could run (turns) 3 and 4 wide open. We definitely had to pass some trucks.”
On a restart with 23 to go, Hornaday was 6th. The team made chassis and air pressure adjustments during the final pit stops which seemingly gave Hornaday the get-up and go he needed. Hornaday started from the pole and led four times for 29 of the race’s 150 laps. It’s the first time a race has been won from the pole @ Kentucky. It marks Hornaday’s 43rd career victory and 4th of the season. “I’m just fortunate,” he said. “Luck’s on our side.”
Hornaday finished .135 seconds ahead of Mike Skinner, the smallest margin of victory in the truck’s 10 year history @ Kentucky. He was losing ground to Skinner during the closing laps of the race, but 10 of the last 20 laps were ran under caution.
“I kept my head on the restarts, and we took about a fifth-place truck and finished second,” Skinner said. “I really thought I could pass (Hornaday) on the outside on the final lap.”
Matt Crafton finished 3rd followed by Timothy Peters and Aric Almirola.
Todd Bodine led the race-high 45 laps, but experienced engine problems late in the race. He finished 16th, 5 laps down.
