On Track Saturday – Atlanta

2008 Atlanta Oct NSCS Carl Edwards takes the checkered flagIt’s not a 3 but a 2 day schedule for this weekend’s racing events at Atlanta Motor Speedway. A lot happened at the track when the Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series garages opened up first thing this morning. There were 2 practice sessions and time trials for both series leading up to the Nationwide Series night race.

Fans will definitely get the bang for their buck. In this troubling economy, that was the idea. “We haven’t launched into a two-day schedule forevermore,” Atlanta Motor Speedway President Ed Clark said. “This is kind of an experiment.”

Brian Vickers posted the fastest speed during the first Nationwide Series practice session while Kevin Harvick was fastest during Happy Hour.

Jimmie Johnson was fastest during the first Sprint Cup Series practice today while Ryan Newman was fastest during Happy Hour.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. won the pole for the Nationwide Series race later tonight at Atlanta. Kevin Harvick will start alongside Earnhardt on the front row.

Martin Truex Jr. won the pole for the Sprint Cup Series race tomorrow night at Atlanta. Kasey Kahne qualified 2nd.

58246535Defending Atlanta race winner, Carl Edwards was hobbling along on crutches after breaking his foot playing frisbe with friends this past Wednesday. “I hate to say it, but I probably won’t be doing a back flip for six to eight months. No matter how many races we win,” he said of his signature victory move. He had a special orthopedic piece made for his racing shoe.

Matt Kenseth is standing by to fill in for Edwards in case Edwards can’t finish the Nationwide Series race tonight.
